Working in the BPO industry means embracing the graveyard shift. While the world sleeps, I’m wide awake — answering calls, solving problems, and counting the hours until sunrise. At first, it felt unnatural. Who enjoys working when everyone else is snoring? But after years of night shifts, I realized: this job doesn’t just pay the bills. It taught me lessons that made me a better father.
1. Patience is a Superpower
Handling irate customers at 3AM? That’s next-level patience. And honestly, it prepared me for parenthood. If I can calmly talk to someone screaming about their internet connection, then surely I can handle a toddler screaming about a broken crayon.
2. Sacrifice Comes with Love
There are nights I miss family dinners or bedtime stories. It stings. But then I remember: I’m not just working for me. I’m working for my kids’ future. Every call I take is another piece of security and comfort for them.
3. Time Management is Key
When your sleep schedule is upside down, every minute counts. The same applies at home. I learned to maximize weekends, use my “daytime nights” wisely, and be intentional with family bonding. Hindi na pwede yung “mamaya na” — kasi oras ang kalaban.
4. Communication Matters
BPO life sharpened my communication skills, not just with clients but with people at home. Explaining things simply, listening actively, and staying calm — skills na mas kailangan sa pamilya kaysa sa trabaho.
5. Gratitude for Small Things
When you’re up at 4AM, sipping coffee to stay awake, you learn to appreciate small blessings. The same goes for fatherhood. Every hug, every drawing from my kids, every “Thanks, Pa” — these little things fuel me more than any energy drink ever could.
The graveyard shift isn’t easy, but it shaped me into the dad I am today. It taught me patience, sacrifice, and the true meaning of why I work hard.
Because at the end of every night shift, when I come home and see my kids’ faces — I know it’s all worth it.
