Let’s be honest — minsan parang magic trick ang paghawak ng sweldo.
Kaka-ATM mo lang sa Friday, tapos by Sunday… poof! Gone.
As a dad, gusto nating maibigay lahat sa pamilya — good food, school needs, bills paid on time. Pero minsan, kahit gaano ka sipag, parang laging kulang. Over the years, I’ve learned a few budgeting hacks that actually help keep the wallet (and the household) a little more stable.
1. Track Every Peso
Before, I used to say, “Basta may laman pa, okay pa.” Big mistake.
Ngayon, I track every expense — yes, pati yung ₱20 na kape sa 7-Eleven. Once you see where your money actually goes, you’ll be surprised how much you can save by cutting small unnecessary buys.
2. Follow the 50/30/20 Rule (Tatay Edition)
- 50% for needs (bills, groceries, tuition)
- 30% for wants (Netflix, Jollibee dates, family treats)
- 20% for savings or emergency fund
Even if you start with just ₱500 savings per cutoff, it’s a start. Tuloy-tuloy lang — small progress is still progress.
3. Use Cash for Daily Expenses
Try this: withdraw only what you’ll use for the week.
Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Mas madali kasing gumastos pag GCash or card, kasi ‘di mo nakikita yung pera physically. With cash, every bayad feels real — and that helps you think twice.
4. Plan Meals & Baon
This one’s a game-changer. Meal planning saves you from the “Ano ulam?” panic and helps avoid impulsive food delivery orders. Bonus: mas healthy pa for the kids.
5. Have a “Family Fund Talk”
Hindi lang ito responsibility mo mag-isa. Encourage your kids (lalo na yung mga teens) to understand budgeting. Let them know why we can’t always say “yes” to everything. It builds teamwork and appreciation.
Budgeting isn’t about depriving your family. It’s about making sure what you do spend on matters — and that there’s something left for the future. Hindi mo kailangang yumaman agad. Ang goal ay peace of mind, one paycheck at a time.
