How Much Allowance Should Kids Get? A Parent’s Guide

August 18, 2026 / Filed Under: Parenting

At some point, almost every child starts asking the same question: “Can I have some money?”

Maybe it’s for a snack at school. Maybe it’s for a toy they’ve been eyeing. Or maybe they’ve simply reached the age where they want to have a little money of their own.

For parents, this brings up another question: How much allowance should kids actually get?

There’s no magic number that works for every family. Allowance depends on a child’s age, your household budget, where you live, and what expenses the allowance is expected to cover. More importantly, allowance can be a great opportunity to teach children how money works before they’re old enough to manage bigger amounts.

Why Give Kids an Allowance?

Allowance isn’t just about giving children spending money.

When kids have a small amount of money they can manage themselves, they begin to experience real financial decisions. They learn that if they spend everything today, they won’t have anything left tomorrow. They also discover that saving takes patience and that sometimes you have to choose between two things you want.

These are simple lessons, but they’re much easier to understand when children experience them firsthand.

How Much Allowance Should Kids Get by Age?

For younger children, the amount doesn’t need to be large. A child around five to seven years old might receive a small weekly allowance, perhaps ₱50 to ₱250 depending on the family’s circumstances and what the money is intended to cover.

At this age, the goal isn’t to give them enough money to buy everything they want. It’s simply to introduce the concept of having money, making choices, and saving for something special.

Children around eight to ten may be ready for a slightly larger allowance, perhaps ₱250 to ₱500 per week. They can start taking more responsibility for small purchases and setting aside part of their allowance for bigger wants.

By the time children reach their early teenage years, their allowance may increase because their expenses often increase too. An allowance of around ₱500 to ₱1000 per week can be a reasonable starting point for some families, although this should depend heavily on what the money is expected to cover.

Teenagers may need a larger amount if they’re responsible for transportation, meals, school-related expenses, or social activities. At this stage, the goal should gradually shift from simply giving money to teaching them how to manage a budget.

These figures are only examples, not rules. The right amount is the amount your family can comfortably afford while giving your child enough opportunity to practice managing money.

Should Allowance Be Weekly or Monthly?

For younger children, weekly allowance is often easier to understand. A week feels relatively short, so children can quickly see the connection between spending, saving, and waiting.

Older children and teenagers may benefit from receiving money monthly. A monthly allowance gives them more responsibility because they have to make their money last longer.

It’s almost like a small financial training exercise.

If they spend everything during the first few days, they get to experience what happens when there’s no money left—without the serious consequences that come with making the same mistake as an adult.

Should Chores Be Connected to Allowance?

This is one of those parenting decisions where there isn’t a single correct answer.

Some parents believe that children should receive allowance regardless of chores because household responsibilities are simply part of being a family member. Making the bed, cleaning up after yourself, or putting away your belongings shouldn’t necessarily require payment.

Other families use extra chores as an opportunity to earn additional money.

A combination of both approaches can work well. Regular responsibilities can remain unpaid, while special jobs—such as washing the car, organizing a storage area, or helping with a bigger household project—can provide an opportunity to earn extra money.

This helps children understand the difference between contributing to the family and earning money for additional work.

Teach Kids to Divide Their Money

Giving an allowance is only the beginning. One of the most useful things parents can do is teach children what to do with the money once they receive it.

A simple approach is to divide money into three categories: spend, save, and give.

A child might use part of their allowance for something they want, put another portion into savings, and set aside a small amount for giving.

The exact percentages aren’t important. The habit is.

As children grow older, you can introduce more advanced ideas such as budgeting, short-term savings goals, and eventually banking.

Let Kids Make Small Money Mistakes

This can be difficult for parents. If your child wants to spend all their money on something you know they’ll regret, your instinct may be to stop them.

But when the purchase is harmless, letting them make a small mistake can be a valuable lesson.

If they spend their entire allowance on something and then realize they don’t have enough left for something else they wanted, they’ve just learned a lesson about opportunity cost without losing a significant amount of money.

It’s much better to learn that lesson with ₱250 than with ₱25,000 later in life.

The Goal Isn’t the Amount

At the end of the day, allowance isn’t really about how much money you give your child.

It’s about what they learn from having it.

A child who learns to wait, save, compare prices, and think before spending is developing habits that can serve them for decades.

The amount will change as they grow.

The lessons should grow with them.

I don’t think there’s a perfect allowance number. Every family has different circumstances, and children have different levels of maturity and responsibility.

What matters most is giving kids a safe opportunity to practice managing money while the stakes are still small.

Because eventually, they’ll be responsible for much bigger financial decisions.

I’d rather have them learn how to save a few dollars today than figure out budgeting for the first time when they’re already paying rent, managing bills, or supporting a family of their own.
